What is a Thorgrip® resin bonded surface?
Thorgrip™ Resin Bonded surfacing provides a hard wearing, durable and excellent anti-slip surface. It works as an excellent anti-skid system for driveways with steep inclines giving both the tyres on your car and also your hike up the driveway in slippery conditions!
Once the existing surface has been correctly prepared, the resin is applied and aggregate is then scattered onto the area; once cured, the surface is swept to an even finish.
This type of surfacing is ideal if you are looking to create a rustic or heritage look. You can also customise your surface with a choice of colours, textures and designs. Either natural or pigmented aggregates can be used.
The finished surface is between 4-5mm in thickness.
Although the similarity in names makes it slightly confusing, there are various differences between the two products.
Resin Bonded surfacing is where the chosen aggregate is scattered and bonded onto a resin base, providing a textured appearance of loose stones. The Resin Bonded system will have some initial shedding of aggregate and needs to be swept and maintained, ensuring that loose aggregate is removed. It is also a waterproofing system and therefore completely impermeable meaning all substrates must be laid to a correct fall prior to application.
Resin Bound Surfacing is a trowel-applied system that has selected aggregates mixed with the resin and laid to a smooth, level surface with no loose stone. Resin Bound provides a decorative, hard-wearing surface dressing.
Originally developed to provide anti-slip surfaces for our nation’s roads and motorways, the idea and process has been modified to fit into residential areas quite seamlessly. Basically, the existing surface is prepared, and then the resin is applied, over which the aggregate is thrown over to provide an anti-slip finish.
Our anti-skid systems use a mixture of tough, flexible resins and highly abrasive resistant aggregate. The advantage of our resin systems over others is that it cures very quickly. Your surface can be back in use within two or three hours depending on the weather conditions and area size.
Our Thorgrip® resin system lends itself perfectly to pathways and drives as it is 100% resistant to oil, de-icing salts, water and fuel. This means the substrate is protected which leads to a longer life span and a more pleasant, cleaner looking surface for years to come.
Depending on the condition of your existing driveway or patio, you may be able to overlay it. If the surface has minor dips these can be regulated by either using the Thorgrip® or for larger areas using our Thorscreed system. As the surface needs to be laid to a fall to ensure no ponding, any dips need to be rectified prior to any application of resin bonded surfacing.
Although resin bonded surfaces give excellent grip both under foot and to car tyres, we would strongly recommend encouraging you to go with a resin bound surfacing finish as oppose to resin bonded if a member of the household has impaired mobility.
Weather conditions such as rain, humidity, dew, wet aggregate or any other ground moisture can present a big danger to your Thorgrip™ Resin Bonded system. It is critical that you avoid moisture at all costs! Moisture and resin instantly react together, producing bubbles which will appear as foam or clouding within the resin. We carefully monitor the temperature on sites also, as this can affect curing times and the finished result!
